AUSTRALIA’S men’s water polo team, The Sharks, will not contest the medals in Beijing after drawing with European champions Montenegro in their final pool game yesterday.
Needing a win to move into the semi final stages of the Olympic competition, the team could manage only a five-all draw after leading 4-3 into the last quarter.
Crescent Head’s Sam McGregor managed to get on the score sheet in his final Olympic match.
Australia came back from 2-1 down in the first quarter to tie things up at 3-all at half time and lead 4-3 at three quarter time, but goals by Montenegro in the final quarter meant the match ended in a draw.
Australia had hoped to be in medal contention at these Games and started confidently with a win against Greece, before a narrow loss to Spain.
A win against Canada was followed by a 13-12 loss to Hungary and the draw with Montenegro.
The Macleay’s other Olympic hopeful, Leith Brodie, finished his Games program last week with two relay bronze medals.
