Deaf boardriders make the most of Crescent Head surf conditions

19/08/2008 9:56:00 AM
SURFERS from Western Australia, Victoria, Queensland and NSW gathered at Crescent Head’s newly crowned national surf reserve for the inaugural ‘Deaf Surf’s Up Australia’ meet recently.

The event was hosted by Crescent Head Boardriders in conjunction with Deaf Boardriders NSW.

More than 30 competitors entered the event, comprising three surfing divisions - longboard, shortboard and body board.

The standard of surfing was exceptional, gifted surfers such as Mitchell Robson (NSW) and Stephen Ashley (Victoria) excelled in the less than average conditions.

Ashley won the longboard division, Mitchell won the shortboard and Mark Howells the body board.

After a long day of surfing, the presentation was held at the Crescent Hotel where competitors enjoyed a few drinks and celebrated well into the night.

Organisers hailed the event as a complete success, feeling they had contributed to a special event that established friendships and a sense of family among the deaf surfing community.

Crescent Head Boardriders were proud to host the event and are already planning for the next one to be held in two years time.
